Prasat Kutisvara

Three prasats in a severe state of ruin with some still visible sculptures to come. Kutisvara is historically significant in that it was mentioned in an inscription in connection with the 9th century during the reign of Jayavarman II, the founder of the Angkor Empire. This is one of the earliest references to a temple in the Angkor area. The central tower displays the Preah Ko style.

Kutisvara is historically significant in that it was mentioned in an inscription in connection with the 9th century during the reign of Jayavarman II, the founder of the Angkor Empire. This is one of the earliest references to a temple in the Angkor area. The central tower displays the Preah Ko style.

The outer towers are in the Pre Rup style. Many tourists do not visit this temple and some of the drivers do not know it. Just point it out on the map. It's a little off the main road back between some rice paddies. During the wet season, when the dishes are full, bikes can not reach the temple, requiring a short but potentially wet walk from the road to the temple.

Kutisvara Temple is a small brick temple, quite difficult to find in Angkor. It is a place that serious Angkor enthusiasts will give time to visit. Kutisvara consists of three very dilapidated towers, arranged from north to south. They are half-buried, making them hard to find. I was determined to visit Kutisvara, so I told my tuk tuk driver, Han, to slow down his vehicle while I was scanning the space on the opposite side of the Banteay Kdei road. By chance, I found this ruin that I believe to be Kutisvara, because there are no other ruins along this stretch that "fits the bill".
