The East Mebon (Khmer: ប្រាសាទមេបុណ្យខាងកើត) is a 10th century temple in Angkor, Cambodia. Built during the reign of King Rajendravarman, stands on what was an artificial island in the center of the now dry reservoir of East Baray.
The East Mebon was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and honors the King's parents. Its location reflects the concern of Khmer architects with orientation and cardinal directions. The temple was built on a north-south axis with the Rajendravarman State Temple, Pre Rup, located about 1,200 meters to the south, just off the bar. The East Mebon is also on an east-west axis with the temple of the Phimeanakas palace, another creation of Rajendravarman's reign, located about 6,800 meters to the west.
Built in the general Pre Rup style, East Mebon was dedicated in 953 AD. It has two closing walls and three layers. Includes the full range of durable Khmer building materials: sandstone, brick, laterite and stucco. At the top is a central tower on a square platform, surrounded by four smaller towers at the corners of the platform. The towers are made of bricks; Holes that previously swelled stucco are visible.
The sculpture in the East Mebon is varied and exceptional, including independent stone elephants two meters high in the corners of the first and second layers. Religious scenes include the god Indra upon his three-headed elephant Airavata, and Shiva on his hill, the sacred bull Nandi. Carving on lintels is particularly elegant.
Visitors who look to the upper level today are left to imagine the vast expanses of water that formerly surrounded the temple. Four stages at the base give a reminder that the temple had already been reached by boat.
