The name of the temple is relatively modern, which means "turning the body". This reflects the common belief among Cambodians that funerals were performed in the temple, with the ashes of the body ritually rotated in different directions as the service progressed.
History
Pre Rup was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and is probably located in an ancient shivaite ashram, built by Yasovarman I in the previous century. [6] Perhaps it was in the center of a new capital built by Rajendravarman, with the southern dike of East Baray as the northern boundary of the city, but none of the dwellings survived [6] and Philippe Stern's "East Town Hypothesis" has never been confirmed by archaeological findings.
