Among the "Roluos Group" temples there are some of the oldest permanent structures built by the Khmer. They marked the beginning of the classical period of the Khmer civilization, dating to the end of the 9th century. Some were totally built with bricks, others partially with laterite or sandstone (the first large Angkoran temple built with sandstone was possibly Ta Keo [3])

At present, it consists of three main temples: Bakong, Lolei and Preah Ko, along with the tiny Prasat Prei Monti. Both in Bakong and in Lolei there are contemporary Theravada Buddhist monasteries.
